Overview:

Divalproex is a medication that is used to treat certain types of seizures, bipolar disorder, and migraine headaches. It is an anticonvulsant that works by increasing the levels of a neurotransmitter in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps to calm the brain and prevent seizures and other abnormal brain activity.


Medical Uses:

  • Seizures: Divalproex is used to treat various types of seizures, including absence seizures, complex partial seizures, and generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

  • Bipolar disorder: Divalproex is used to treat manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder.

  • Migraine headaches: Divalproex can be used to prevent migraine headaches in some people.


Side-Effects:

  1. Nausea and vomiting

  2. Diarrhea

  3. Dizziness

  4. Tremor

  5. Blurred vision

  6. Weight gain

  7. Hair loss

  8. Liver problems

  9. Pancreatitis

Drug Interactions:

  1. Aspirin

  2. Warfarin

  3. Carbamazepine

  4. Lamotrigine

  5. Phenytoin

  6. Rifampin

Dosing:

The dosage of Divalproex will depend on the condition being treated, as well as the age and weight of the patient. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dose for you. Divalproex is available in several forms, including tablets, capsules, and sprinkles. It is usually taken two or three times per day, with or without food.


Notes:

There are several precautions that people taking Divalproex should be aware of. These include:

  1. Liver function: Divalproex can cause liver damage, especially in children under the age of 2, people with a history of liver disease, or those taking other medications that can affect the liver. Therefore, liver function tests may be necessary before and during treatment with Divalproex.

  2. Pancreatitis: Divalproex can cause pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas. Symptoms of pancreatitis include abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

  3. Birth defects: Divalproex can cause birth defects in babies born to women who take the medication during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should discuss the risks and benefits of taking Divalproex with their healthcare provider.

  4. Suicide risk: Divalproex, like other medications used to treat mood disorders, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, particularly in children, teenagers, and young adults. If you experience any new or worsening symptoms of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

  5. Bleeding disorders: Divalproex can cause bleeding disorders, particularly in people who have a history of bleeding disorders or who are taking other medications that can increase the risk of bleeding. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising.

  6. Central Nervous System (CNS) depression: Divalproex can cause CNS depression, which can lead to drowsiness and impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. You should avoid these activities until you know how Divalproex affects you.
